Man shot during Waukegan mugging

A man shot in the midst of an armed robbery Wednesday night in Waukegan has been treated and released from the hospital, police say.

Waukegan police responded to a call at 11 p.m. on the 1000 block of Leith Avenue for a man in his 20s who had been shot in the hand.

The victim told police he was outside his home when a black man in his late teens or early 20s pulled a handgun on him and demanded property. The victim attempted to disarm the robber and the gun went off, police said.

The shooter then fled north on foot. He's described as 5-foot 8-inches to 5-foot 10-inches with a medium build, wearing a red, white and blue T-shirt and denim shorts.

Police aren't saying what type of property was taken in the holdup.

Anyone with information should call the Waukegan Police Department's "Tip Line" at (847) 360-9001.
